This piece was my first ever black and white architectural image. I was commissioned to shoot exterior images of 150 Broadway in NYC in the financial district. To be able to get that whole building in the frame, I went across the street to Zuccotti Park. Standing across the street in Zuccotti Park, I noticed this sculpture.
The depth of the shapes and the way they worked together reminded me of my time in film school, School of Visual Arts, and for one of my assignments, I made a short film called Circle in The Square. When I got my commissioned shots, I ran over to the sculpture and grabbed a few shots of it.
Back in the editing room, I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted with the final piece. With the layers of shapes, I felt it was important to add a lot of contrast and make the shapes really dramatic. Not only was this image the result, but my style was born.
I immediately felt a connection to the dramatic black and white imagery and haven’t looked back since.
