Tammany Hall (also known as 44 Union Square) is a historic building located on the northeast corner of Union Square. The building was first built in 1929 and I have passed it literally hundreds of times passing through Union Square Park. I noticed about a year or so ago that a glass dome was added to the top and after doing some research I learned BKSK Architects were commissioned for the design. Always being at ground level, I noticed the dome but never paid much attention because I couldn’t see the detail from that angle.
In the fall of 2020 I was commissioned for a shoot a few blocks south of Union Square and when looking out the window, I noticed the top of the glass dome. It was about 10-15 blocks north of where I was so I threw on my telephoto lens with a 2x extender so I can grab this close up. I felt it was important to show the details and craftsmanship that went into this design.
I love this shot! It’s one of the few horizontal images I have and love the design on this nearly 100 year old building.
